Style Spotlight: Suzanne Boyd

Fashionistas don’t come more refined than this. Anyone who moves within fashion circles will know that the name Suzanne Boyd is synonymous with style and grace. Boyd, who grew up in Dominica and studied in Jamaica, moved to New York in 2004 to head-up the now defunct ‘Suede’ magazine. The magazine closing down shouldn’t make you question her talents. Boyd came to the publication with eight years experience under-her-belt working as the editor of Canada’s leading fashion magazine, Flare. It’s a shame Suede folded, I still have all four issues! I love the vision Boyd brought to magazine. The fashion pages were fresh and innovative and it was gratifying to read make-up tips I could actually use. There’s no word on what Boyd’s next project will be but I’m sure it’ll be effortlessly chic, much like herself. Read this 2004 New York Times article on her which was written soon after she’d taken up the position at Suede.

Christina Aguilera

Candid of Christina taken in December ’06.
Christina had better watch her back, I’m coming for that jacket! I’ve yet to check who the designer is but it’s simply gorgeous. Perhaps I should have included Christina in this month’s poll. She has also come a long way in the style stakes. However, the platinum blonde hair I could certainly do without. See below for ideas on how to steal this look.

Steal Christina’s Style…

Jacket: Corded Bib Jacket, $110, www.missselfridge.co.uk
Jeans: Stone Wash Denim, $39.80, www.forever21.com
Pumps: Kent Pu Heel, $16.99, www.gojane.com
Bag: Medium Red Biker Bag, $149.99, www.lushfashions.com
Headband: Amber Headband, $3.99, www.clairesaccessories.com
Pendant: Cairo Pendant, $15, www.alltherageonline.com

This look is all about layering. Don’t forget to wear a vest and knit underneath the jacket and Christina adds a nice touch by teaming the look with a long, gold pendant (just visible). The jacket is from the U.K. (and they do not ship to the U.S.), but there are some cute alternatives below ;)

Best of the Rest…

Left to right: Wool Vest, $32.80, www.forever21.com; Red Oversized Kelly Bags, $39.95, www.purseboutique.com; Tweed equestrian blazer, $39, www.newport-news.com

The red bag Christina is wearing is by Balenciaga, but the copy in the post above has no business being $150. This ‘Hermes’ copy is only $39 and makes a cute alternative. I’m also happy about finding the vest/jacket by Forever 21, the print is exactly the same. Wear with a navy V-neck to keep your arms warm! Lastly, pop the collar up of the tweed equestrian jacket by Newport News – It’ll add a dramatic flair to the whole outfit.

Style Inspiration: Menswear

Kiara Kabukuru wearing the perfect male-inspired suit by Alexander McQueen.
Janet Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow prove men’s tailoring has an edgier side.
Blue Shirt: Woven Tunic, $22.80, www.forever21.com; Watch: Coleman Silver Analog Digital Watch, $19.99, www.target.com; Tote: Large Burgundy Barclay Tote Purses, $34.95, www.purseboutique.com; Flats: Springfield, $79, www.ninewest.com; Waistcoat: Glen plaid vest, $25, www.newport-news.com; V-Neck: Chloe Cinch V neck, $24.50, www.delias.com; White Shirt: Silk-Trim Pintuck Shirts, $15, www.oldnavy.com; Coat: Wool Trench Coat, $49.50, www.wetseal.com; Pants: Plaid Pant, $32.50, www.alloy.com; Tie: Merona Satin Necktie, $19.99, www.target.com; Ankle Shoes: Syrup, $178, www.kurtgeiger.com; Clutch: Candice, $45.95, www.bakersshoes.com; Slim-Fit Pants: Slim Leg Cut Pants, $118, www.maxstudio.com; Pumps: Christian Python Heel, $22.99, www.gojane.com; Ring: Square Amazonite Ring, $24.99, www.target.com; Blazer: Luxury Stretch 1 Button Jacket, $128, www.expressfashion.com; Braces: Visit www.ebay.com; Hat: Herringbone Newsboy Ivy Hat, $15.95, www.goomoo.com; Tee: Naughty but Nice Tee, $4.99, www.wetseal.com

Menswear goes beyond tailored suits and shirts. Think hard lines, muted tones and an over-all polished look. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that you can’t be versatile when playing around with mens clothing. Put your own spin on it by wearing bright colors, a cute tee under a blazer (a la Gwyneth) or invest in a pair of braces (suspenders) and team with a fitted shirt to add a feminine twist to your look. I love the ‘ankle shoes’ by Kurt Geiger, they’re the perfect example of feminine elegance fused with masculine chic.

Cash, Check or Charge?

Cash: Nasdaq Glt Heel, $31.99, www.gojane.com
Check: Ethel, $99.99, www.aldoshoes.com
Charge: Nude Gold Glittery Gucci Pump, $495, www.bergdorfgoodman.com

Platform shoes look like they’re here to stay, but instead of donning the typical black, leather pair try a shiny metallic color. The Gucci ‘High-Heel’ pump comes in gorgeous colors such as metallic plum and cherry red but this bright gold pair are equally as stunning. Check out these two great copies, but both for less than half the price of the original Gucci pair. U.K ladies see this red/orange pump from Faith Shoes for only twenty pounds!
