Real Life Divas: Tracy Reese

Ladies be sure to check out the latest episode of BET J’s “Real Life Divas.” The show spotlights various African-American women who have made a significant impact in America be it artistically, socially or politically. Tracy Reese’s segment was particularly interesting, well maybe I’m just bias being a fashionista, but I definitely encourage all to watch. The show walks us through Tracy's career thus far, touches on her artistic inspirations and delves into her reasons for continuing to pursue her dream even after her first label failed. Check your local listings for air times :)

Note: “Real Life Divas” is co-produced by Crystal McCrary Anthony. Check out the ‘I Like Her Style!’ feature on her here!

Who Needs Two Sleeves?

Lucy Liu attending the premiere of ''Code Name: The Cleaner'' at The Empire 25 last week in NYC.
Beyonce Knowles attending the L'Oreal Legends Gala to benefit The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund at the Museum of Natural History, November 8, 2006 in New York City.
India.Arie arriving at the 37th Annual NAACP Image Awards at the Shrine Auditorium last year in LA.
Joy Bryant attending the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood Party in September ’06.

Two sleeves are overrated. Since this winter has been pretty mild, well in D.C. it has, try making-do with just one. Even the simplest dress can stand out with just one sleeve. I think I found Lucy Liu’s dress which if I’m not mistaken is by Rachel Roy. If not, Rachel Roy’s is a great alternative. Also see below for some other great finds. My personal favorites are the Lela Rose dress and the long black dress from Windorstore.com.

My Picks!

Left to right: One Shoulder Dress by Lela Rose, $1095, www.net-a-porter.com; Layla Asymmetrical Dress by Rachel Roy, $790, www.net-a-porter.com; Maggy London Ruched One-Shoulder Chiffon Dress, $154, www.macys.com; Aloha Wrap Dress by Fighting Eel, $148, www.girshop.com
Left to right: Storm, $99.50, www.windsorstore.com; One Shoulder Giraffe Dress, $70, www.asos.com; One Shoulder Retro Print Dress, $70, www.asos.com; Olivia Asymmetrical Dress by Sunner, $269, www.shopbop.com

If your dress can handle it wear with a show-stopping belt. I think Joy Bryant’s outfit would have looked great with a small beaded belt. Also team with black tights to keep you warm if winter hasn’t been too kind to you in your home state. Finally, one sleeve dresses were made for big earrings, so find the best pair you can to draw attention to your bare shoulder ;)

Catwalk Copy…

I nearly fell off my chair when I saw this stunning silver, brocade coat from, yes you guessed it, Forever 21 – they need to start paying me commission! Anyway it’s just shy of $65 and looks very much like the coat Burberry Prorsum featured during their Spring 2006 ready-to-wear show (see it here on Style.com). Wear with these gorgeous, sparkly pumps (Charles by Charles David Women's Amco Pump, $114.95) from the great new accessories site Endless.com. I would absolutely team this look with black opaque tights or a pair of skinny jeans. Just be sure to wear something equally as cute underneath so that when you have to take your coat off you’re still the ‘belle of the ball.’

Note: See this other ‘Catwalk Copy.’ Many stores stock their own version of Roland Mouret’s infamous body-hugging dress.

DesignersForDarfur

Designer Malcolm Harris was kind enough to send me the following article about his latest project aimed at highlighting the atrocities currently occurring in the Northeast-African country Sudan. The region of Darfur has been besieged with conflict for over three years now and in an effort to mobilize Americans to take action, Malcolm has enlisted an impressive list of supporters to help him spread the word. He is working closely with the organization Save Darfur (www.savedarfur.org) to put together an amazing fashion show featuring specially designed pieces by Zac Posen, Naeem Khan and Chado Ralph Rucci to name a few. He is also expecting Don Cheadle and George Clooney to attend as guest speakers. All proceeds raised will go towards ending the conflict in Darfur plus the event is bound to be the talk of Fashion Week. To learn more, read the article below and stay tuned for more info on this necessary event.

Published: Friday, January 05, 2007 Darfur Benefit on Tap for Fashion Week By Rosemary Feitelberg NEW YORK — There might be some unexpected star wattage at New York Fashion Week next month — and all to help raise funds for the people of Darfur.

George Clooney has expressed interest in attending and speaking at a benefit fashion show being planned to help raise money for the residents of the war-torn area of the Sudan, according to designer Malcolm Harris of Mal Sirrah. Harris and Lydia Hearst-Shaw are organizing the event.

The DesignersForDarfur benefit is expected to be 8 p.m., Feb. 9, but the exact time and place have yet to be set. Those details hinge on Clooney's availability, Harris said. The Oscar winner has taken a public role in exposing the atrocities in Darfur, and in April even went undercover with his father, Nick, an anchorman and columnist, to document the crisis on film.

Regardless of whether Clooney shows up, Chado Ralph Rucci, Zac Posen, Naeem Khan, Jeremy Scott, Sue Wong and Mary Ping are among the designers who have agreed to create an outfit that will be sent down the runway. Participants will make clothes in red, black, green or yellow, or any combination of those colors that are symbolic of Africa. Their creations will be auctioned online immediately after the event, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the nonprofit Save Darfur Coalition.

At least 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict and more than two million have been displaced, according to the Save Darfur Coalition. More than 3.5 million people in the region rely on international aid for survival, the group reported.

Despite those statistics, Harris has struggled to get more American designers involved in his project. "To be quite honest, it has been much more difficult than I could have ever imagined getting designers on board. This is not meant to be an indictment of the industry, but we have found it a bit shocking the number of persons that really don't have a sense of the crisis in Darfur, which only makes this event even more challenging and inspiring."

Save Darfur supporters Mia Farrow, Don Cheadle and Mira Sorvino are expected to be in the audience. Harris' co-chair Hearst-Shaw walked in his September runway show and was part of the finale that featured Harris wearing a T-shirt with "Darfur Is Real" on the front and "Please Don't Wait for the Movie!!" on the back. Encouraged by people's reaction to that message, Harris set out to do something bigger.

"This event is not about one designer or a group of designers...," he said. "This is truly a chance to show that we are not this self-consumed, superficial and/or elitist industry."

Nia Long on the cover of Essence…

Nia Long has been very quiet (that is if you don’t include the alleged beat-down her current boyfriend gave her ex!) The last time I saw her in a movie was ‘Alfie.’ Then there was “Big Momma’s House” which we do not speak of. Fear not, she has a new film out this year titled “Premonition” alongside Sandra Bullock so hopefully us Nia fans will get to see a new side of her in '07. On another note can someone explain to me what was so great about “Love Jones?” The only thing I loved about that movie was the soundtrack... Maybe I was too young?!

Thanks to Juicy News for the pic of Nia!
**UPDATE** Thanks to Nyesha for the right pic!
