You Asked: Where Do I Find My Vintage?

This is the question I get asked more than any other.  I can almost never tell someone what I do for a living without it being quickly followed up with, "So, where do you find all your stuff?"  This used to really bother me, how dare someone try to steal all my secrets, I would think.  But as time has gone on, I have begun to realize that most people are genuinely curious.  They like what I sell and they aren't that familiar with vintage, so they wonder where it comes from.  Also, it has taken me time to see this, but what people are paying for is my time and my eye, not my secret vintage sources.  It takes time to sort through shops, estate sales and flea markets.  Most people are fatigued easily by this process, but not me, I'm energized.  Then there is the time to clean, repair, photograph and ship it to your door.  Secondly, my ability to sort through the crap, and let me tell you, there is a lot of crap in this world.  For every great dress I find, there are thousands that are tacky, have moth holes, stains, odd sleeves or are size xxxsmall.  I know which stains will come out and I will clean it 5 times if I have to.  I keep up on what is in style and what you are buying, so I only buy what you want.  All of this is to say, where I buy my stock isn't a secret, you are paying me to shop for you.  Even I don't pay wholesale prices for a lot of the vintage I buy for myself and my home, given the mostly one of a kind nature of vintage, if you really like something, you better buy it when you see it.  So, here is a list of where I shop for Salvage Life.  These are general, not specific, you have to do a little work on your own, try Yelp it 's great for finding shops and markets.

1. Thrift stores...you don't find a ton of old vintage here.  1970's and newer and lots of great housewares.  I shop a lot at thrift shops for me and my family, so if I come across vintage, I pick it up.

2. Flea Markets...I probably buy the most here.  You have to get up early and endure the weather.  The last flea market I went to was in the rain, but it was worth it because there weren't a lot of shoppers.  There are tons in Southern California, usually on Sundays.  I'm partial to the Long Beach Antique Flea Market, since it is so close to home.

3. Antique Shops and Vintage Clothing Stores...I don't usually go to these places looking for store stock because the prices are higher than wholesale, but I shop there for fun and sometimes I run across things that are affordable enough to sell.  Or if I am looking for a specific item for a client.

4. Estate Sales...digging through dead people's stuff was awkward at first, but it really is a treasure hunt. It is amazing what people hold onto, it makes me think about my own hoarding problem.  I think these are where you can find the best stuff, but they are hit and miss and there is a lot of competition.  I have driven a hour, waited in line for two hours, only to find out that "loads of vintage clothing" meant a few pairs of polyester pants.  Also, there are dealers who get into the sales early sometimes and get all the good stuff.  I went to a lot more of these before I had Ruby, it can be hard to take a two year old.

5. Referrals...Sometimes I get a call or an email from a person who heard about my shop and has vintage to sell.  This can be great, but beware, what other people think is vintage, may not be what you are hoping for.  Here is where the time comes in again, I drive to someone's house who says they have tons of vintage and they have a couple hats and a few pieces of jewelry, but if I didn't go I would be dreaming of this amazing score that I passed up.  I have learned to ask specific questions and request photos before driving to the location.

6. Warehouses...there are some companies here that sell vintage by the pound.  I have had some success with these and the prices are really good, but you have to dig through a lot of dirty, smelly clothes to get to the good stuff.  I put on gloves and a mask and go to town.  I did a lot more of this too, before I had Ruby.  Since I am so particular about my stock, I have a hard time buying in bulk.

So, there you have it, the veil has been lifted.

New Vintage This Week

As you know, I have been very busy with family events lately, the Unique LA show this last weekend and setting up my new studio.  To top off the hecticness (i love making up words), Ruby decide she wanted to potty train this week.  If you are a mother, you understand that if a child shows interest in the toilet, you cannot pass up the opportunity.  Luckily, it has been going well and I was still able to add some really pretty items to the SHOP this week!

Ruby's Vintage Shopping Adventure or Lack There Of

I purchased this vintage dress from a women at a vintage clothing show that said it was hers when she was a little girl. I love the color combo, the pin stripes and the little embroidered doggies.  I put Ruby in it the other day and followed her around taking pictures.  It's pretty much impossible to get her to pose, so I wrote a little story to go along with the random photos I took, pretty silly, but kind of fun.  Hope you have a great Wednesday!
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Ruby who loved to wear vintage.  She found some money that had fallen out of her mom's purse, so she thought she would go out on a vintage shopping trip.
She was very excited for her adventure!
Ruby threw on her favorite knit gray shrug, borrowed her mom's sunglasses, grabbed her baby doll and set out to her favorite vintage shop.
When she was about half way down the driveway, Ruby remembered that she couldn't drive and she missed her mommy, so she headed for home.
Luckily, Ruby had her thumb to comfort her when mommy saw that she had tried to go shopping with her money.

Outfit Post: Trying to Wear Color on a Gloomy Day

I wore this outfit the other day when it was pretty gloomy outside...it's funny how the weather often dictates the clothing I choose to wear.  I put on the turquoise sweater and red belt after I realized how dull my color choices were.  I think this outfit could use a red umbrella or something!

Dear Creatures, You made a fabulous cape! xo Beth

When it comes to presents, my family knows me pretty well and kindly awarded me several Anthropologie gift cards for Christmas, which I attempted to spend as speedily as possible.  Sometimes I find it hard to use gift cards because then they'll be gone, but I didn't have too much trouble this time.  I found this amazing cape on the sale rack, which has really spurred my fascination with capes and has received countless compliments.  Also, found this striped t-shirt at Anthro, I paired both with some vintage and a pair of jeans, easy enough.  P.S. Feel free to laugh at the last two pictures, I was just messing around.

WONDERFUL weekend at UNIQUE LA

Well, it was a whirlwind of a weekend at the Unique LA Show.  I had an absolute blast and practically sold out the booth! It was wonderful to be surrounded by the tremendous talent and professionalism of the other vendors at the show. Thank you to everyone who came out, I really enjoyed sharing my vintage finds with you.  For those of you that don't live in the area or weren't able to make it, here are some photos to enjoy.
There is about a week of shopping left to get your goods in time for Christmas and we will be having a sale in the online shop later this week, so be sure to sign up for our email list and follow on the blog and twitter to receive the coupon code!  All these opportunities are in the sidebar to the right.

Ok, here it goes...Outfit Post!

I've been debating for a long time about whether or not to do outfit posts of myself.  I want to share what I wear, since I sell clothes and I think you, my customer, might be interested in what I wear.  On the other hand I feel silly taking photos of myself and posting them online for all to see.  So, maybe I should weigh the pros and cons:

Pros:
1. Blogs are about sharing personal stuff, what's more personal (yet appropriate) than what you wear?
2. It will give me motivation to get up and get dressed rather than working in my pj's all day.
3. People will hopefully think I am stylish and want to buy more things from my shop, haha.

Cons:
1. The awkward feeling of standing in front of the camera and then looking at silly photos of myself.
2. I will have to get dressed instead of working in my pj's all day.
3. Risk looking like a fool in front of friends and strangers.

The pros and cons seem about equal, so I'm just going to go for it and see what you think.  If you like it, I will do more.

Salvage Life Featured in Live Magazines

Salvage Life clothing and jewelry was featured in the October Style and Beauty Issue of Live Long Beach Magazine.  I worked with the stylist, Casey Lum, last month for this spread and was very anxious to see how it turned out.  They ended up using a lot of our pieces, very exciting! You can also view many of the same photos in Live OC Magazine online (pgs. 15-19).

Making Room For What Matters

I'm still cleaning house around here and I have a feeling I will be for awhile.  I listed 8 lots on Ebay thus far and hopefully will put up more next week.  My car stereo got stolen for the second time in one year, which has really made me think about what is important.  If only I had the self discipline to take the face off the darn thing every time I got out of the car!  My life is so cluttered with things, and things are not what life is about.  It is time to clear out some of these things, so I can see what I really have.   Anyway, if you are interested in seeing what I am selling, click here to view my auctions.  Hey, maybe I'll even put some clothes on there rather than taking them to Buffalo, I might get more for them.

Sally Jane Vintage

Recently I have been making friends with some of the other wonderful online vintage sellers.  Someone was asking me the other day how I can be friends with the competition?  I explained to them that vintage is one of a kind, so we really aren't competing and we can appreciate the items that another seller has in their shop.  We connect on the plain fact that we think vintage is great and we all are trying to make a living selling what we love! This week Salvage Life has a little collaboration with Sally Jane Vintage, a great vintage blog that we sponsor.  We sent some of our favorite pieces from the shop to Jennifer of SJV and she sent us some lovely photos of her wearing them.  To see more beautiful photos, click over to Sally Jane Vintage.   If you are interested in purchasing any of the items shown you can find them here: yellow printed dress, blue printed dress, edwardian blouse, clay circle skirt.
