Rethinking Baby Gifts

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about what we buy for our children.  Loads of cheap plastic toys line the shelves of Target and other discount stores calling out to our kids with their bright colors and low prices.  I recently bought a set of doll toys for $20 which included a bed, bouncy seat, car seat, carrier, changing pad and high chair.  Ruby has barely played with it and all the pieces are taking up space in her room.  Over the last few years we have accumulated a lot of toys that she barely plays with and have no aesthetic appeal.  I am starting to think about what I buy for other people when they are expecting or have young children. On Saturday, I went to a baby shower for a friend and I had been saving this vintage set of wooden stacking blocks for her baby since I found out she was pregnant.  I love how well it is made and how timeless it is.  I can't imagine Ruby's doll toys will be as good in 50 years.

River Oaks Fashion Show 2011

On Feb. 23, more than 450 Houston fashionistas worked the red carpet at the second annual River Oaks Shopping Center Fashion Show! All ticket sales were donated to the American Heart Association, and when all was said and done, $13,000 was raised for the cause. Fashions from all of the finest River Oaks boutiques graced the runway, and of course my chic friends, we have to show you our favorites!

Oscars 2011: Amy Adams (linked)

For the sake of choosing a fave, I would have to pick Amy Adams' L'Wren Scott as my 2011 Oscars "best dressed" winner (pic from fabsugar).  Okay, Amy Adams kind of falls in the same category as Allison Hannigan for me -- not that pretty (pick a random young'un from the street or a college co-ed and they're prob hotter), a little bland, and somewhat annoying.  However, Amy Adams is a FANTABULOUS actress, and I lurve her dress . . . it reminds me of the jcrew maxi (linked) I blogged about before, and the fit + pseudo-mandarin collar + bottom flare are to die.  And, of course, who doesn't want to be decked out head-to-toe in sequins?!

P.S. You could wear your Armani to the Oscars!

Closest thing I've found so far to the Rachel dress (linked) that I covet so much.  Too expensive obv; I'd only pay that much if it was a 100% replica, not "just close".  From my additional research, the Rachel dress was made by some brand called "Idol", but I can't find any trace of this brand!!  Sigh, so thwarted.

What can I say?  I lurve maxis.  And, as a bona fide brandwhore, I automatically wanted after seeing eskandar sold in all the maj dept stores, retailing at $300-$600 (e.g., I'm very fond of my $5 ungaro maxi (have I talked about it enough?)).  Who doesn't love an elastic waistband?  I can def don this as a tube when nec.  Given I already have a long white maxi dress, I prob don't need a long white maxi skirt -- but hey, florals!  Variety is the spice of life, right?  Prob wouldn't spend more than $15-$20ish on this, though, and that's pushing it ($5 ungaro maxi, anyone?).

A -- 2/16/11: Ugh it looks like a grandma's curtains.  I wouldn't even want this for $2 in some thriftbin; it's not even silk.

Like!  Been looking for a no-sleeved Burberry dress, and pink, of course, is a fave.  Tag (not pictured) shows it's vintage, which is an automatic plus twenty points in my book.  A little worried about the drop waist, but am wondering if there's a way to make it cinch with the buttoned bands . . . hm.

A -- 2/23/11: The color is gross, a mix of bubblegum and vomit.  The style is gross, you will look like an anime schoolgirl.  The fact that it is meant for someone around 10-12 yrs old is gross, it LOOKS like a little girl's dress.  I think that about sums it up!
